The Water Resources Education Network (WREN) has funding available to help launch community partnerships that raise awareness and educate citizens about ways to keep Pennsylvania water resources clean and healthy. As a WREN project leader, you will make a difference to assure that families will enjoy clean drinking water for generations to come through nature protection and pollution prevention.

For 2015, WREN will offer two different funding tracks: Watershed Protection Education track (awards up to $5,000) and the Source Water Protection Education track (awards of up to $8,000). Click to download 2015 WREN Grants Coming Flyer -9-5-14

Source Water Protection (SWP) Education Grants – projects educate communities to prevent pollution to public drinking water before it starts, ways to protect water supply recharge areas for aquifers and intakes, educate citizens and municipal officials on steps to protect drinking water sources by creating and implementing Source Water Protection Plans. Source Water Protection applicants may select one of three tiers for SWP Grant project:

  • Local SWP Project – up to $3,000/project; a community water system working with other local partners
  • Region SWP Project – up to $5,000/project; two or more community water systems working together with additional partners (conservation district, schools, watershed groups etc.)
  • County SWP Collaborative Project – maximum of $8,000 in funding; multiple water systems collaborating with county partners; create Source Water Environmental Education Team (SWEET) Team that conducts public education with local municipalities, emergency management and general public.

Source of funding for Source Water Protection Collaborative grants is the PA DEP Source Water Protection Program through Section 1452 of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996, administered by US Environmental Protection Agency. Source of funding for Watershed Education Grants is PA DEP through a Section 319 federal Clean Water Act grant administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
